Working with Older Children 1 yr and up

Heart of Stillness Craniosacral Therapy

Petaluma and Sebastopol, CA

Once children are mobile they don’t usually want to lay still on a table to receive craniosacral work. Would you when you were this age? For this reason I will work with your active child through play. I have my own set of toys for kids and your child is welcome to bring his or her own favorite toys.

In a play session I first interact following your child’s lead, and just as with infants, I’m respectful of your child’s impulse. This is the most important thread for me to follow in learning about whatever issue has caused you to bring your child to me.

Once your child and I get to know each other better, I will make suggestions and explore his or her willingness to make contact through whatever games we play or other contact we make. I will use touch when there are slow points in your child’s activity, as long as he or she allows it. It’s important that there is choice for your child. Challenges in a child’s nervous system can become aggravated when they don’t have choice and their own impulse is thwarted.

While your child and I are interacting with play and whatever direct craniosacral work I’m able to bring in, you too are engaging and playing as well. It’s important that the whole family at times be involved. Your child will lead the way and often let you know when and how to engage. This will be part of the set of important information we will learn as your child guides us through whatever story he or she is demonstrating. For the health of his or her nervous system it’s most important we be present for what your child is showing us. We can trust that your child’s nervous system will show us whatever is most important for them in whatever challenges they are facing. This is a key principle of this work, whether I am listening with my hands, which we call craniosacral therapy, or I am listening from a greater distance away through playful interactions.

After sessions we will also schedule a 20-30 min follow-up phone call, included in the session cost. This call should be at a time and place where your child is not listening so we can have the kind of adult conversation we need to have about the session without speaking about your child in front of him or her.

I ask that you plan on two sessions to start in order to evaluate after the second whether you’d like to continue with this approach.
